Moms and dads, were you aware that it is okay to say yes to sugar-free gum? If your child is age five or older, sugar-free gum is just fine. In fact, it can actually be good for the teeth. Saliva production is increased when we chew gum for 20 minutes after meals. Saliva washes away plaque acid and can actually strengthen tooth enamel.
A list of sugar-free gum brands
The American Dental Association gave its seal of acceptance after several studies showed the benefits. A few Wrigley brands carry the ADA seal, based on research that focused solely on those brands. Other sugar-free gum brands are fine as well, even if they do not carry the ADA seal yet. You can find the following gum brands in most drug and food stores:
- Ice Breakers Ice Cubes
- Glee Gum
- Mentos Pure Fresh
- 5 Gum
Gum brands use different types of sweetener to be sugar-free. Xylitol is the best of these, with more teeth-healthy properties than others. Children and adults can chew between 6-10g of xylitol per day in order to prevent bacteria build-up. Epic, Spry, and Miradent gums are a few brands that have over 0.7 grams of xylitol per piece. These are not as common next to the cash register, but they can be purchased at specialty stores and online.
